Designing a metal lampshade and want to know about overheating
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.59 PM
Hi, I am in the process of designing my own spun metal lampshade and I just want to make sure that the lamp doesn't overheat. I would like to know: 1. What will happen if the lamp overheats? 2. I am planning on making a floor lamp with a metal lampshade where the lightbulb is sitting half outside the shade, would this really overheat if I use a modern low watt lightbulb? Many thanks, Marina

If you're using an LED or compact fluorescent low energy lamp, overheating is not an issue.
Provided that there is a reasonable space around the lamp, it should also work well with traditional tungsten fillament lamps up to 100 watts. If you're going to use a traditional bulb, then its advisable to wire the light using a high temperature rubber flex as this will resist the heat much better than standard PVC flex.
