Painting different types of wood to get equal shades
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.49 PM
Hello, currently having house renovated. We have striped wood bare ie. bannisters, spindles, skirting. There are different types of wood like pine etc. want to create a medium oak look showing grainy effect with a glossy shine. Contacted Ronseal & they recommended quick drying varnish medium oak & clear gloss coat. Concern is how do I create an even shade throughout? As some woods are darker than others. Is there a base coat/primer I could use then paint medium oak??? Really appreciate the help

Hi, a reliable way to get an even shade would be to apply a dark stain to the wood before lacquering/varnishing. You can also buy diy products e.g. Ronseal, which will have a stain in the varnish. However, using a dark stain will mask the beauty of the grain somewhat, which would be a shame, especially with oak.
My advice is to make the most of the different shades and grain patterns. I generally prefer a low-sheen clear lacquer which highlights the natural character of the timber while giving a subtle uniform finish.
Hope this helps.
