What's the best way to level my very steep garden?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

Hi there, I have just bought a new house and with new houses comes our postage stamp sized garden!! It sits on a 1/6 gradient quite steep but because we are an end it slopes to the side too so we have the problem 2 ways. We were wondering what the best way to level it off would be, ideally we were wanting to put a decking level in and then steps down to one level as its too small a garden for anything too fancy. We are very restricted. Just wondering what the best and cheapest way to do this would be? Ideally we'd like to do it ourselves if the jobs not too big as we both work full time. Thank you in advance for any advice

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Decking would be the the cheaper option it would hide the slope to the front and side . I wouldn't advise this to be a DIY project . The decking would have to be built on solid support if you was to get this wrong then eventually it will start to move and become unsafe Regards Ben

Hello katie72875. Decking is an ideal way of providing a level area on any sloping garden. Provided its built correctly, this would be the most cost efficient way of levelling an area. Alternatively, you will need to build some sort of a retaining wall at the lower end of the garden and backfill behind this up to your desired level with sub soil and top soil. In the past we have used reclaimed railway sleepers or concrete blocks to build retaining walls. Both of these add time and therefore costs to a project and realistically would need to be completed by a professional. The last thing you want is a retaining wall that doesn't work!! Good luck. Dan
