Bathroom Fitting

Cowl for extactor fan

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.59 PM

We have an apartment (newish build) that has had a water leak into the bathroom extractor fan and the fan now needs to be replaced. This fan was a new one as when we bought the flat earlier this year I noticed that the original was badly corroded. The extractor fan is on the top floor and vents vertically through a plastic pipe up to a cowl on the roof. The leak was inspected today and I've been told that once the fan has been replaced I will need a new cowl as the one fitted is for a soil pipe and not a bathroom extractor, hence the water ingress. Having looked on the net I cannot see any difference in the cowls and their usage. Can anyone tell me whether the diagnosis I've received sounds correct? Many thanks. Thanks for the response Tile-ist. I'm not sure if this is the correct way to respond but it's the only way I can see to do it! The cowl has been fixed now and so far, so good. The original one looked like a grey, plastic mushroom but unfortunately I have no pics of it and can't take any as I live a long way from the apartment.

from your description it sounds like you have a soil pipe and the cowl is more than likely suited for venting a soil stack where allowing a little water in is fine. idealey you want a roof tile/slate vent which is waterproof and designed for this purpose. the actual vent its self will depend on the tile /slate you have fitted. prices are as little as £10.00 . these are standard in all our bathroom fits,
