Conservatories

Is it feasible to move our conservatory from house into garden and make freestanding?

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.02 PM

We have a 20ft x 10ft conservatory (aluminium frame, age approx mid 1980s) which is now surplus to requirements (we're building a brick extension). It has a couple of minor leaks, but generally speaking appears to be in good condition. We wondered whether it was feasible to move it down our garden by building a freestanding brick wall for it to stand against. Does anyone have experience of doing this? Presumably it will be a case of digging foundations, building a full height wall for the back and low lying walls for the conservatory to sit on. We're in Hampshire. Thanks!

Hi, You are spot on with what will be required, just make sure the foundations are min 600mm deep and the main wall is strong enough to take the load. Remember you have to consider wind & snow loading even more so as this will be detached from the house which would of given the structure some shelter from the elements, Would advise you install a perlin ( support ) along the length of the roof rafters in the middle. Hope this helps.
