Fencing

Erecting a fence

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.59 PM

My neighbour bought the house next door about 8 years ago, and immediately removed all the soil and laid a thin concrete floor, so that his car could use it to park. He than built a single-brick wall to keep the one and a half metre height of soil in my garden contained. that has worked OK up to now. Too days ago he built a fence on top of this wall. It is secured by drilling into the house and drilling into the bottom of the end of the wall, adjacent to the street. I asked him if he was going to stabilise it, and he said he was not finished yet. Today I examined it, and it rocks about when you touch it. I would have thought he needed to stabilise in the mid-section, because when the really strong winds blow, I can see this crashing into my garden. I do not know how to put this to him, can anyone suggest a discreet bit of advice? I need to do something about this, as I think it is unsafe as it is. Thank you, Rene.

How high is the new timber fence? As the original brickwork is one and a half metres high, the new addition must make it feel very enclosed. You may like to know that planning permission is required for boundary walls / fences over 2m high - this may be worth exploring. I agree with ADR that this is a typical DIY job and would also be quite concerned over a single skin wall retaining 1.5metres especially as they are parking cars on the higher ground.

hi rene, unfortunately you live next door to a diy expert, no matter what you say to him he will do his own thing, all you can really do is make sure there is nothing near the fence that will get damaged when it falls down. personally I love them, they create so much work for proper tradesmen correcting their mistakes. good luck alex
