Bathroom Fitting

Bathroom fitters with NVQ Level 3 in plumbing

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.02 PM

Hi I am a leasehold flat owner in North West London. My flat is an ex-council property and the freehold is owned by Barnet Council. The Management Company requires permission for alterations made to the flat (including remodelling bathrooms). Having hired a bathroom company some months ago, I went through the application process for the refurbishment of my bathroom and permission has been granted for the work to commence. However the permsission has been given on the basis that certain conditions are fulfilled. One of these is that the tradesman who is fitting the bathroom must hold a Level 3 NVQ in plumbing and they will need to see copies of the certificate after the work has been carried out. After several months of too-ing and fro-ing my current bathroom company are saying they are struggling to find plumbers with this level of qualification to complete the job and we have reached a stalemate. I am starting to think that it might be best to start the whole thing over again and hire a new company (and go through the application process again). My question is, how rare is it to find a plumber/bathroom fitter with a level 3 NVQ in plumbing and will I struggle to find a replacement company? Are there any plumbers out there who have experience with Barnet Council/Barnet Homes? Thanks very much for your help in advance!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I think you need to go back to Barnet Council as they clearly are talking out of their Barnet!..!  (well I thought that was funny!)    This has already been answered several times by others in a different way.   But I thought I would poke the ashes a bit.    I have been plumbing and heating for 33 years, ex BG and NVQ's were not around when I was young. I have had a few apprentices and know for fact they norI would not fit bathrooms with an advanced level 3. (or whatever you wish to call it)  These lads that genuinely studied and passed their level 3 have no intention or interest in fitting bathrooms as go on to fit boilers and general gas work.   Now before you bathroom fitters out there start ranting on me..,,,I am on your side chaps! ,.Bathroom fitting is a different skill set.   Good bathroom fitters and there are many, are very multi skilled, and skills learned on the job not in a classroom or text book. You either can do it or you can't, either love it or hate it.  Personally, 1 -3 hrs in any customers house is enough for me,  In our own business we deal with Plumbing & Heating and now this new-age Heat Pump crazy stuff but never bathroom fitting.   Bathroom fitting is handled by bathroom fitters and there is a fine line between the two.  It is also a hard graft.  These chaps are clever sods in their own field.   Interestingly C&G never offered a Bathroom fitting course yet Public Liability insurance is sold  for "Bathroom Fitting" as a separate cover from "Plumbing & Heating" Barnet C, should be asking 2 questions.   1. that your tradesman has adequate PL cover and that this PL policy covers for flats above a certain floor!  Yes there are these exclusions.   2. That your Tradesman is competent in his business and skill set.  Requesting a level 3 and sight of, is pointless, meaninglise, irritating, and shows clearly they do not understand their quest.  As a side note you could ask how many of Barnet, subcontracted workers have Level 3.   The truth is none!  As no need.

Hi lots of level 3 plumbers but they go on to work in gas which pays much more. In my experience kitchen fitters have level 2 or no plumbing qualifications as its not rocket science. Hope you find one, let me know how it goes. good luck

Hi, I am City and Guilds advanced plumbing cert. I do bathrooms, mainly mobility type, but also for other clients. NVQ3 is a high level and yes most will go for Gas work as it pays much more. I am in Wiltshire, too far away.

I do not have experience with this local authority but I do have a NVQ level 3 this qualification is just of a higher learning program to NVQ level 2 which also means 9 times out of 10 the guy with a NVQ 3 is also qualified in gas if he has sat the required exams after the NVQ. Also he will have experience in advance hot and cold water etc..

Level 3 NVQ is the traditional city and guilds advanced plumbing. It covers design and more technical aspects of plumbing systems and knowledge.

A level 3 nvq is for the gas industry and is not needed for bathroom fitting, bathroom fitting is multi skilled in its own right plumbing, tiling, carpentry. Just comes down to experience really.
