How long will it take my ceiling to dry out?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.01 PM
We had a large leak from our shower room (now fixed) that has come through out living room ceiling. There are 5 large areas that are still damp to touch (it happened 1 week ago) - how long should we wait for it to dry out completely before redecorating? Is there any way to get rid of the damp smell?

Hi,
Firstly you should be preventing condensation forming, so would recommend using a dehumidifier. I would suggest closing the windows when the dehumidifier is switched on because you would otherwise be drying the locality. If a dehumidifier isn't an option, lots of air circulation by the use of fans with windows open slightly.
If the ceiling is damaged by the water you need to replace the plasterboards etc.
Depending on how wet it got, drying out will take at least 2 weeks but could be up to 4 weeks.
Hope this helps,
Regards
