Which way to lay wood flooring

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

Hi I would like to put wood flooring all the way through my hallway and conservatory. I notice that most flooring is laid across rather than lengthways but read that you go in direction of light source, which would be mean laying lengthways (from front door you can look straight through hallway and conservatory to garden). Don't want it to look odd. Any advice?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, it really doesn't matter which way the flooring runs although two points to consider. If your existing floor is timber floor boards as opposed to chipboard flooring, then I advise to run new flooring in opposite direction of the floor boards for stability reasons. This could be very important especially if the old floor is up and down and uneven. Also in a narrow hall, if you run the boards across the way, it gives the hall a wider appearance rather than long and narrow which gives it a nicer appearance. Regarding the light source scenario, this does not matter in the least. It's all about stability, appearance and your preference. Good luck and hope it looks nice for you. Thanks, Iain
