Can you lay carpet directly over an rsj?

Hi there, We had an extension about five years ago which left us with a 'sloping floor' in one of our bedrooms. We were too tired to do anything about it at the time because the builders told us it was the best solution. We have finally got around to sorting it out. Basically we think the RSJ was poorly installed so the joists moved. To cut a long story short it means we have an rsj running the length of the room under the windows which is higher than the existing joists by about 25-30mm at one end and 20mm at the other. Our plan is to lay the floor boards back down so that they fit as flush to rsj as possible. This will leave a 'step up' under the window between the existing floor boards and the top surface of the rsj of about 5 - 10 mm one end and 1/2 mm the other. Obviously we will be putting ply board on top of the floor boards before laying the carpet. We'd be really grateful for any advice on the following: 1. Can you fit carpet directly onto an rsj? 2. Is there anything a skilled carpet fitter could do to disguise the look of the step? No-one will be walking on it as it is under the window and there is also a radiator there. We might have a piece of furniture on one end of it but we can make it stable adjusting the legs. 3. Does anyone have a better suggestion about how to approach this? Thanks for any advise!
