What do I need to consider when asking an electrician to check my house's wiring?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.58 PM

How can I ensure the check is comprehensive and what certification is provided when doing this? I already know the electrician should be Part P qualified and that the works carried out have to be certified, but I don't know the details. Please help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Part P certification is only a requirement for actual installation work i.e. if new sockets, light etc are installed. For an electrician carrying out an Electrical Installation Condition Report, you need to check that they have City & Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing and you should get a 7 page EICR (Cert/Report) on completion. Take a look at the Electricity safety Council website, especially the leaflets section at as they explain the EICR testing and inspection process in some more detail. Ideally you should select an NICEIC registered electrician to do the work.

The first thing is that they are able to self certify work.this will show that they have had their work assessed and are insured and have proved capable of doing an honest job.ask for proof.read feedback.ask to see qualifications and insurance. If honest they wont mind.trustmark qualified is also a good sign. Being on safet register. ask questions. Say what you want.get written agreements thats what i do

An electrician will need to discuss with you your reasons for wanting or needing an EICR (electrical installation condition report), this will determine how in depth it needs to be and also any limitations that need to be agreed. For example, it would usually be agreed that 'cables run in prescribed zones' is made a limitation as to prove this you would need to expose the cables from within the plaster, this is unreasonable to expect of the home owner to agree to so is agreed that it isnt checked. They will fill out an EICR form, which is several pages long and this should be completed, if so and that work has been done correctly then you should not have to worry, just discuss your needs and find out what they will do and you should be able to get a good idea of how in depth they plan on being and if they are the right person for your job.
