Fit skirting boards or lay flooring first?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.01 PM
We had our kitchen/diner re plastered when we moved in (2 years ago!) and had a new kitchen fitted, but haven't got round to doing anything since. We currently just have bare floorboards and need new skirting boards all round the room. But which do we need to do first, lay the flooring (probably laminate in dining area and tiles in kitchen) or get the skirting board done? And could just one tradesman do this for us or would we need separate ones for each job?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Kate.
You should lay the laminate floor 1st and leave approx 10mm expansion gap all the way around the edge and fit the skirting boards last.
That's the correct way to do this, and yes one tradesman should easily do this.
Can the existing floor boards be sanded and treated? Save some money, then the skirting fitted?
Hope this helps

Kate,
First the floor and then skirting. One tradesman should do this but very often you find that somebody who can do skirting and panel flooring can't tile, so it would be just hard to get decent one.
