Painter and decorator or handyman needed to repair rotten wood in bay window area?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.58 PM

I live in an older terraced house and need five standard and one wooden bay window plus two doors stripped and repainted (externally) However there are a couple of problems in that the bay window has an area that needs patching due to rotten wood (it's something that's been done on several previous occasions so hopefully can be done again) and the doors need some shaving off as they stick badly during the winter months. Can a painter and decorator do such repairs or should I be looking for a general handyman or whoever to undertake the whole work?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there Colin. I would say most qualified decorators should be able to perform minor repairs with timber. The mistake people make on repairing windows is they do not prime the treated areas with a good oil based primer. All treated areas and all sides need priming and all open end grains or you will always be [patching up so to speak] Two pack wood fillers are also good to use and can be sanded to match in to the existing, but again the areas being worked on need to be sound and primed. So yes a time served decorator should be able to do these little jobs with ease! Hope this helps Andy Herbert

Hey Colin, I would say that if the timber is not bad enough to a point where it needs to be replaced then a painter and decorator person should be able to sort it out with wood filler which replaces the part of the wood which has rotten and toughens the wood around it. He can then treat it with a primer to make it water tight and then paint over it. I hope my answer was helpful to you. Tzvetozar from Colour Perfect Limited
