Dig out sand and hardcore surface before damp proofing and laying concrete?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.01 PM

I'm intending to lay a tiled floor in my hall. I have removed some original stone flags which have sand underneath. Do I need to dig out the sand and hardcore the surface before damp proofing and laying a concrete slab? How deep does the hardcore and concrete need to be?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Morning ollyfly, My opinion would be to be safe than sorry. Whilst you have the old flags lifted, gain a reasonable depth and ensure a solid compacted base, introduce some insulation together with a certified damp proof membrane (DPM) consider screed as an option to the concrete your talking about as you're able to get a perfect level, pre-tiling, Kindest Regards, TrueBuild
