Sockets tripping after water leaked onto a junction box under floor boards

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.01 PM

Every now and again the downstairs sockets trip. This started to happen after water leaked onto a junction box under floor boards. The junction box has been replaced and all wiring checked by an electrician. The wiring is apparently fine but the sockets now trip every few days. I can reset but am at a loss as to why they continue to trip. It happened while the electrician was at the house and he suggested that it had to be something that was plugged in. This can only be the TV, sky box or broadband router. But I don't understand why the sockets only trip intermittently. Any ideas please?

I am presuming it's the RCD thats tripping if so then, it sounds like you need to start off with insulation tests then ramp tests on your circuits then individual items plugged in do the maths and take it from there. It's not a DIY job. I don't say this just on a safety issue but it really is beyond the unqualified. Kevin.

Why is there a junction box for this circuit? Is it just an extension for the cable or there is something else fed from the same circuit using junction box? As mentioned above, get a qualified electrician and beginning would be to trace exactly what circuit feeds and do insulation test first to prove cables are good, because it could be anything even a faulty breaker. Do you have a RCD in your consumer unit?
