Improve poor condition of old tarmac footpath

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.01 PM

I have an old tarmac footpath at the front of the house which leads up to the front door. It is in poor condition, and to retarmac it would entail getting the lot up and starting again. Another alternative would be to patch up the pot holes with tarmac and give the path two coats of Tarma Seal, which is a sort of bitumen paint. Would this method be a complete waste of time and money? Or would it be better to either block pave, concrete or slab the existing surface? There are two inspection covers which would have to be raised, but would the tarmac be suitable to use under those choices. Methinks I need a professional opinion. Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

To repair, by patching up the path would only be a stopgap solution. Better to take up existing & block pave or slab in new. To lay on top of existing (which I think you are also asking) wouldn't work as it would be raised too high. The inspection covers would be changed to paving covers which allow for block or slab paving to be inserted into them. Paving, depending on slabs (multi size sandstone can now be got for little more than block paving).

Hi there, from experience there is no point repairing the old path, as it won't last no longer than a year and you will only save yourself a few hundred quid. Having it paved or slabbed not only it would last longer, but it would look better as well. To have it slabbed its around the same price. hope this helps
