What lintel type and thickness to use for single garage
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.01 PM
Hi There, I am knocking out a 2.4m wide and 2m high section out of my single garage wall. The bricks are only one skin thick and it also has a roof. Do I need a steel lintel or would concrete even wood be enough to support the roof and remaining 100 or so bricks? Thank you

Is the wall being altered external? If so I would use either concrete or steel. Check out the 'off the shelf' lintels - try Catnic for steels and Naylor for concrete. They have different types of lintel for different applications, check their websites for the drawing / details. They also have load and span tables and you can get in contact with them and ask them which option is best. If it is external you may want to cover it with some external cladding, to keep it covered. Make sure you get the right bearing. I always go 150mm unless the span warrants 200mm (each side) you may want to bear it on a couple of high density blocks.
