Grouting between tiles keeps disintegrating and needs replacing in floor of new extension
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.01 PM
We extended our house two years ago and put in a new kitchen. The floor was tiled on top of concrete and boards. Since then we've had to get the builders back time and again as the grouting between the tiles has kept disintegrating and needed to be replaced. On top of this a number of tiles have needed to be replaced for cracking. The builder has now said that it's what happens when you tile onto such a surface and the surface was designed by the architect. Should this happen or is there a problem with how the floor/tiles have been laid? Thanks.

If you have a concrete floor adjoining an existing floor which is wood, then you will always have this problem. The tiles should have been started at the joint between the two floors, then there should have been an expansion joint, either a silicone joint or a movement joint profile. If the tiler has straddled the joint, then it has been set out wrong and this problem will keep occurring until a movement joint is fitted.

The problem is that your tiler failed to mention that this would happen given an inappropriate substrate. Ditra matting always helps in cases like these, however it definitely needs to be re-done.
