Are plug sockets plugged into another socket with wiring on display safe?

I have recently moved into my house and I am concerned about the plug sockets in the living room. Some of the plug sockets are fitted to the wall but are plugged into another socket with the wiring on display as opposed to being inside the wall. Any advice would be appreciated...thank you. Thank you. Looks like I need to post a job!

Hi samandy9270, it looks like somebody has done a diy job by adding these sockets. It's not the best way of doing this, providing all the terminations are correct in the plug as well as the socket and the wire cannot be pulled out, then it's just like using an extension lead (the wire would need clipping to prevent this pulling out) as in the plug there should be a 13a fuse. As for the plug off a plug, that's also not the best idea and not really recommended. Personally for the one pictured, I would remove this and use an extension if you needed power there or have a electrician install a power point there. Hope this helps

On the limited description and without a photo or opportunity to see exactly how its been wired, its difficult to say whether its safe or not. Ideally electrical cables should be concealed or enclosed in plastic trunking etc. This said, just because the cable is visible and clipped along the skirting and plugged in does not make it unsafe, however i suspect what you have is a poor DIY addition which does not meet the requirements of BS7671:2008.
