How big a gap should I leave for cavity when building a garage?
Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.30 PM
Will be building a 8 x 6 metre garage this summer with a mate of mine. Will be a cavity as I do not want any dampness inside. Construction in 4'' hollows, flat roof. No insulation but how big of a gap should I leave for a cavity to be sufficient and for it to work out to block wise on internal leaf? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

The standard cavity size is a gap of 100mm in between the skins of brick etc. 100mm brick skin, 100mm gap and 100mm block internal skin.
If this is a garage and you are not having insulation in the cavity, then you could just use a 50mm cavity, but personally I would leave a 100mm gap. I would also insulate it with some rockwool insulation, the cheapest insulation you can buy. Putting insulation in might be beneficial in the future if you ever decide to use the garage as a extra room that does need insulation.
