Pond pump installation

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

I want to install a pond pump but have an old Wylex domino style fuse board. There is a spare way on the board. Is it possible to take the feed from here and what size armoured should I use? The pond is about 30m from the house. Also any other fittings I may need?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This job is covered by part p regulations and as such should be carried out by a registered electrician or pre notified to LBC for necessary inspections as required or be done under the supervision of a registered electrician to be self certificated by himself. Kevin.

As a pond pump is a relatively small load in terms of it power rating in watts, a 1.5mm Steel Wire Armoured cable would be sufficient. A 30ma RCD will be required as all electrical circuits in the garden must be RCD protected now as per BS7671:2008 wiring regulations. The RCD will provide electric shock protection should a fault develop on the submerged pond pump etc. If you are planning on doing the work yourself as DIY, then you will also need to register your intent to do the work with your local authority building control dept first and get building Regulation Part P consent (normally around £200 - £300). This ensures that the work is legal and logged on their database, and avoids any nasty £5000 fines later on should you come to sell the property. This board is a BS3036 semi re-wirable fuse board and as soon as you add a circuit it will no longer be reasonable to use, BS7671 electrical regulations and building control would require that you brought the consumer unit up to current 17th edition regulations and part of that would require that the bonding also be inspected. As for the cable you can't just pick a cable and say that will do, there are calculations that will take the load and conditions into account, added to that apart from using a 30 ma rcd, a point of isolation would be needed.
