carpetting a cement floor

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

I've got a cement floor . Does it need lining e.g with 3mm ply or should underlay/carpet go straight on to the cement? Also how is it best to attach gripper strip? My instinct tells me masonry nails rather than glue. Can strip be bought fitted masonry nails, where ? Its an old floor not a new build and the floor seems to be dry, no mold etc. Thanks for any advice. I've got two joined rooms to do so might be asking a pro to do it.

You can put the underlay straight down onto the concrete floor, no ply is needed. If the concrete is soft, you may have to stick the grippers down with a fast set adhesive, this you can buy at any DIY store, as nails might not be enough to fix the grippers. Harder the concrete, better chance of getting the grippers to hold. You can buy gripper rods with the nails already in the rail, and you would have to go somewhere like Homebase or B&Q.

Adding to the answer I would recommend before putting the underlay it is best to put paper lining on floor to reduce the dust coming out and for long life of underlay and the carpet.
