Can I connect my Ikea Musik Wall Lamp to a plug?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

Hi, I recently bought two Ikea Musik Wall Lamps (http://m.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/art/20217485/) and realised that they are supposed to be wired in a fixed place by an electrician and mounted to the wall. I don't want to make and holes in my bedroom wall (rented flat) and want to be able to dismount and move the lights when I want to. Can I get them wired up to a plug instead? If so how? I've seen many tutorials on this for the specific lights on YouTube and it looks simple enough and I would rather have a plug with dimmer switch. I would buy a ready made extension with plug and dimmer, cut the ends off and wire to the lights covering with electrical tape so the do not touch. Please let me know if you think this would be safe for me to do. Thanks for the help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No. I would not recommend what you are suggesting for a number of reasons: - the manufacturers instructions specifically say not to do this. - the light is not earthed, which means if there was a fault and you touched it, either you or the fuse in the circuit would blow. - just 50 milliamps is fatal! - electrical tape is just not good enough to properly insulate live conductors. My advice is fit it permanently to the wall as indicated in the instructions. When it comes time to move out, remove it and fill the holes with a little filler. Much easier and safer. Hope that helps.

Tape joints on electrical flex is never safe! If you're going to do this you will need to use proprietary junction boxes.

None of the electricians would suggest you to do that as this would be treated as fixed appliance and your cables would be loose and easily can be pulled out of the light fitting leaving live cables exposed.
