Lack of earthing in old house
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.57 PM
Just bought an old house - it has been described by surveyor as having a 'general lack of earthing' when referring to electrics - is this a big deal? It sounds it! How easy would it be to rectify - are we talking complete re-wire? There aren't many fuse points either when you look at the fuse box - looks like all the bathrooms are connected to same fuse for instance (there are 4) - is that a problem too? Thanks

A general lack of earthing could mean a few things. You may not have an earth in your lighting circuit, no main bonds (earth connection to main services, ie water, gas oil, etc). In some older installations they used to wire the lighting circuits without the copper earth cable as the cost of copper was very expensive and most light fittings and switches had no exposed metal work. This could now be a bigger problem if someone has replaced the fittings with metal ones. With regards to your fuseboard it sounds like you have a small fuseboard which may have been correct at the time the wiring was done, but you really should get it looked at to make sure everything is safe. I would recommend getting an electrician to carry out an electrical condition report on the property, this way you will know what needs to be done to keep you safe.

It seems to me that you need to upgrade your electrical wireing as well as consumity unit.
It will cause lots of ptoblems with your appliances .
so get an electrician for an estimate usually they will be free of any charges and further more get at least 3..
