Plastering & Rendering

rendering or repointing gable wall and chimney in 1900s semi detached property

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.45 PM

I have a 1900s semi and have been fighting damp since moving in. The gable wall and chimney needs repointing but I am unsure whether rendering it would be the way to go?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Rendering the gable end with a 2 coat render system would sort the problem out

the problem with this type of property is it is built using lime mortar, this allows your building to breathe, it does not contain cement, if it has been re-pointed in the past using a cement based material this will lead to dampness, unfortunately traditional lime mortar is a lot more expensive than cement and harder to use,you can render the wall but will never eradicate your dampness issues
