Can fire/smoke alarm be connected via current light fittings in retail unit?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.48 PM

We have been asked by shopping centre management to fit a fire alarm (preferable mains connected) in our centre located in a small retail unit. Any advice on whether it could be easily connected via current light fittings to avoid running a lot of external wiring would be helpful. Thanks

No your smoke alarm should be on its own dedicated circuit on your consumer unit with a six amp MCB breaker on the non RCD side The Alarm must be continuously powered 24 hours a day so it is important that it is not on a circuit that can be turned off by a switch.

Depends on the minimum requirement for that particular shopping centre, they should tell you the category and grade required. So you need to ask them first and get a written confirmation of the grade and category of fire alarm expected from you. This will determine if it can be connected to a permanent light feed or not. However, in most shopping centres, individual shops alarm systems are integrated into a central system to be able to alert a central authority once there is a fire. Therefore, a simple alarm connected to a light feed will not meet this requirement am afraid.
