plastering around electrical sockets and light fittings

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

Hello there I got a plasterer in for some patching after an electrical rewire and he's not taken any of the sockets or light fittings off, he's just plastered round them. Some of the work he's done looks like a dog dinner. Should he have taken the fittings off? Can I ask him to come back and tidy it up? Stupid me, I just assumed he would when I met him at the house, I had to rush off to work and leave him to it.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there Should have taken off sockets and dropped light pendants - it's just the way a plasterer should work, otherwise how would you change these fittings in the future. You can ask him to tidy it up but it's a filler job now then rub down the areas are to small to use multi finish. Regards Joseph

Plasterer shouldn't screw off any electrical equipment. That's usually an electrician's job. Probably your electrician just wanted finished and get payment quicker. This is calling first and second fix when I do rewiring.

Very hard to plaster around sockets and light fittings and make it look neat, can be done but that's more labour, the sockets and light fittings should be dismantled by an electrician. Sockets removed cables isolated and pushed back into the back box and same with lights cable isolated and just left hanging then he can do a half decent job. It's all about timing with these things if you want a professional finish 😀

sockets and lights etc should definitely have been taken off by qualified electrician prior to plastering works and then put back tog by an electrician again. hope this helps.
