What type of paint should be used on artex walls?

My hall way and all up the stairs has artex on the walls, until I pay to get this removed. For the moment I am looking to brighten this up with a cream or magnolia type colour. What type of paint do I need to purchase in order for this to look better. E.g. Silk Emulsion, Matt?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Silk will enhance the textures of the artex, so I would reccomend matt if your not keen on the artex walls. :-)
