Replacing fuse board with old DNO fuse cutout - no means of isolation visible
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.45 PM
I would like to have my old fuse board replaced with a new consumer unit. The existing DNO fuse cutout appears old and there is an old analogue rotating disc type meter. However there is no means of isolation visible other than the integral isolator in the fuse board. How will the installation be isolated safely? Should I contact the DNO and request an upgrade of the fuse cut out? Many thanks

Whilst the old meter and cut-out fuse should be followed up with your DNO, they will not affect you getting the consumer unit upgraded.

Good evening.
In answer to your question,
POINT 1;
The rotating disc meter will need to be replaced for a digital one to start with. It may be advisable to get the main cut out fuse looked at to make sure it still complies. If it does comply they will change the meter and if your lucky they may even put in an isolator therefore it makes your board change a lot easier and safer.
POINT 2;
You could request for a PME system to be installed. Usually this comes with a cost between £40 and £125 dependant upon your DNO and what area of the country you are in. They would then replace the Main Cut-Out fuse and the Meter and provide your property with a TNC-S Earthing system. They would then also put an isolator in too. There may be a wait for this to be installed.
POINT 3;
As an electrician the Main Cut-Out fuse is not our responsibility and is always sealed by the DNO. However in some cases and as long as the DNO has been informed the electrician is sometimes given permission to cut the seal and remove the fuse and then the DNO would come out at a later date and re-seal it.
Any of these options may help you.
Many Thanks on behalf of Hague Electrix Ltd

This is simple to resolve, contact your energy supplier and they will fit an isolator and most probably replace the tails and mark the main earth terminal for approx. £85.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND cutting the seal, this is the dno property not yours and there is an unlimited fine with no time limit that would be applied if caught. Pay the money to the dno and everything is legal.

Hi
If your supplier is a main electricity supplier then you will get a isolator fitted for free ( Eon, nPower ) and British Gas charge around 45 pound. And as for suppliers upgrading their side to 25mm they rarely do, and past the isolater is yours to pay for. Kindest regards, Jeh.

Electricians are not allowed to remove the DNO's cut out (fuse). If there is a problem with the DNO's equipment, tell them and they will replace/repair it. If you want or need to upgrade it to include a cut out switch they will install one. Depending on the area there is a charge for this, There can be two bodies involved, the DNO (District Network Operator) they are responsible upto the cut out. Then the MOP (Meter Operator) they are the people supplying your electric it can be worth while ringing around for the best deal especially if the supplier thinks you may switch to them.
