Uneven living room floor with no damp proofing

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.45 PM

Hi there Looking for a bit of advice please. I have been renovating my 1900's semi detached home and am looking to level out the ground floor as its pretty uneven (3 rooms with slightly different floor heights now knocked into open plan space). However I have just realized that under about 1mm of screed there are tiles that I believe are the original floor from when the house was built. I have lifted these tiles and they are sitting right on top of earth with no damp proof membrane in sight. At the moment there is no visible sign of damp (thankfully). My question is would you leave these there and self level over the top? Also is there any product (self levelling) that can be laid that is totally waterproof which would compensate for the fact there's no dpm? I am really trying to avoid digging up the ground floor as all other work in the house has been carried out and it would be a massive disruption and time delay to me. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers

I think if you try to seal the floor, it will not be able to breathe, then you will end up with rising damp issues. You need to consider excavation, hardcore, insulation and above all else a DPM tied into a DPC.
