Is it wise to use limestone tiles in the shower
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.45 PM
I'd like to use a natural stone throughout our family bathroom. I'd prefer a lighter coloured stone than travertine ( i have it in another bathroom) and really like limestone which I've found in Wickes. The shower is going to get a lot of use but I'm not sure how porous limestone is. I don't like the ceramic alternatives. Are limestone tiles ok? Or unwise?

Hi, in my opinion limestone should not be used in a shower - they are very porous even after sealing. With constant use, the sealer would wear away and they will be high maintenance. If you do not like ceramic, maybe use a porcelain that looks like limestone. The other thing is to check the weight ratio of the tiles if fixing to plaster it will need overboarding with a cement board glue and screwed due to the weight of the tiles. Check with a local tile shop (not at wickes they would not have a clue) about this issue.

Hi I would not recommend using any natural stone in a shower because they are porous and even if sealed with require re-sealing on a regular basis. I have recently completed a bathroom with a limestone floor and ceramic tiles on the walls with a limestone appearance. If you shop around you will find a ceramic or porcelain tile that looks good without the high maintenance.
However if you proceed then please check the weight ratio for the substrate as previously advised.
