Converting a garage to a living room.
Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.30 PM
Hello, I am going to be converting my garage into a living room, the house is only 12 years old and the garage was used as an office when it was a show home so it has all been plasterboarded. I need to raise the floor approx 6 inches to the same height throughout the house as we are fitting an internal door. The garage floor is concrete and completely level with no slope for drainage. What is the easiest and cheapest way for me to raise the floor? Thanks, Sam

hi , please ignore last response !!! building up 6" just with sand and cement will crack !!! to conform to building regs and to create warm comfy area first DPM membrane , then celotex or kingspan insulation then 18mm T & G chipboard flooring !

Agreed, ignore that first response, its an awful suggestion and will give you a lot of problems, including issues with building regs!
1-DPM on concrete floor
2-Celotex
3-Vapour membrane if specified
4-T&G chipboard flooring
Its very easy to do but make sure you conform to building regs and make sure they pass it off! The above will pass building regs and give you a nice warm room!

Hi Sam, best way to do raise the floor level is to add more concrete on to of existing level.
This way you don't have to worry about sub floor ventilation, so you won't get any damp issues ,I don't know the size of the floor surface but just 6 inches in hight won't need to much building sand and cement and labour is minimal .
Hope you find this useful.
Best Regards.
