underfloor heating and screed finish how long before you can use the system

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.45 PM

I have a wet underfloor system just put in . the screed was laid 6 weeks ago at a depth of 60mm. the screed is a standard screed with fibre strengthening. under the screed sits the pipes, under that the insulation and beneath that the concrete slab, with polythene barriers between the concrete.slab and insulation. we intend to use a tile finish, probably porcelain or similar. The question is how long do we have to wait before we can use the heating system and complete the floor finish without cracking the screed. I am getting various advice, from 6 weeks to 3 months. Can anybody please help. Fred Fish

Dear Fred The minuim time to leave a wet screed before turning the heating on should be six weeks. Make sure that the temperature of the water in the UFH system does not go above 50 deg C. and put on for short bursts of about one hour several times a day for about seven days. You should then be able to lay your floor tiles. Minor cracks can appear but these should be visable by now. Give the floor a thorough good clean and apply a thick coat of PVA before laying your tiles. Make sure your tiles can expand with the floor screed by leaving a small gap (10mm) between the tiles and the wall. Regards Richard Thomas (SSM Building Co.)
