Boilermate 2000 with potterton suprima boiler
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.59 PM
Hi, we are extending our house (2 storey extension) from a 4 bed to a 6 bed. This requires the potterton boiler in the utility room to be relocated to allow ventilation. Both boiler and boilermate are 10 years old. My questions are: Can we have the potterton boiler moved or are we better off getting a new unit? Will the boilermate 2000 handle the heating needs of the larger house? Is there anything else I need to consider? Thanks very much for any advice you are able to offer!

These two appliances are nearing the end of their serviceable life; also your boiler will be inefficient in terms of modern day boilers. But I believe if you want to take the risk then relocate the appliances. As regards the additional heat load required to meet your future demands a Gas Safe engineer will have to carry out heat loss calculations to ensure your existing boiler can cope.

Hi,
My advice would be to change the boiler for a new condensing boiler and get rid of the boilermate and fit an unvented cylinder and pressurise the heating system. Another thing to consider while altering the heating is to zone your heating so upstairs and downstairs are controlled independently of each other.
I hope this is helpful
thanks Adrian

The boilermate is a thermal store so depending on how many radiators you currently have should be able to cope, the boilers are usually sized to the property and adding more radiators can sometimes affect the performance. Other considerations are are you adding any more bathrooms to the property as each thermal store is sized to a specfic flow rate on the hot water side and sometimes require larger stores to cope with added bathrooms.
I wouldn't venture from this type of system as they are generally good. We are currently installing a Gledhill Greenheat store working with a gas boiler and log burner with pump station serving radiators and hot water for a seven bedroom b&b feel free to check my mybuilder page once we have completed and added the photos.
