Kitchen Fitting

Cutting acrylic worktop

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.45 PM

Hello, I just bought an Ikea kitchen that will be delivered within a month. I bought an acrylic worktop, and was advised to keep an extra 3cm on the worktop to make sure it fits into the kitchen space perfectly. I chose not to pay Ikea for the installation, but am asking my builder (who is also renovating my house and is familiar with Ikea kitchens) to fit the kitchen. However, my builder has never cut acrylic kitchen worktops and has told me he does not feel comfortable doing that. I was wondering what is involved in cutting the edge of the acrylic worktop? Is it best to get a specialist to come in solely for the cutting job? Thank you NS

Cutting acrylic worktops are no different to laminated worktops, it's just the jointing that's a little more involved but there are videos on YouTube on how to do this and most manufacturer's websites, they aren't that difficult but if your builder is still not comfortable then do get a specialist in.

Hi Natalia Not having loads of experience with acrylic worktops, I advise you to hire in a specialist installer as these type of worktops are designed to have inconspicuous joins which if done incorrectly may not look as expected. I do believe they can be cut well enough with a fine toothed saw but will check on this for definate for you tomorrow and let you know. Hope this helps Mat M A Joinery & Building services

The use of a router, and appropriate jig is essential for a professional finish. Do not use a saw. If your builder's not comfortable, then get an expert. Hey we can't all be good at everything. Good luck.
