Damp Proofing

Condensation/damp in house since having new fire fitted

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.57 PM

We live in a 3 bed 1934 semi, fully double glazed. We changed our traditional open fire 5 years ago for a glass fronted hole in the wall gas fire. Since then we have had condensation on the windows and damp spots appearing in the front 2 bedrooms. I ventilate the bedrooms well in winter (when conditions aren't freezing), and we have central heating. We've even got a dehumidifier now which works on auto almost full time during the winter - horrendous electricity bills! Wish I'd never changed the fire! Any ideas gratefully received.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there You either have to have a heat recovery unit fitted (not cheap) or revert back to an open fire. Regards Joseph

You could look at improving the mechanical extraction fans to ones fitted with "humidistat" controls cost around £275 fitted. Or even a positive pressure ventilation unit. These can be googled and there are even a few companies out there that will offer "money back guarantees" for limited periods. The cost of these units is around £900.
