Can I attach a new fence to existing spurs?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.57 PM

The old fence between my garden and next door's needs replacing, it must be many years old consisting of tapered vertical boards attached to arris rails which are fixed to wooden posts that have been bolted to concrete spurs (spaced apart by 87"). Due to a shoulder injury I'm not able to handle or dig out for new concrete posts so I came up with a plan to use the existing spurs which seem very solid in the ground, bolt new 3"x3" posts to them and connect them together with rails which will provide a frame to fix 6' x 6' fence panels butted together (9 in total). I'd also be looking at stepping the lower rail out about 1" from the bottom of the new fence to act as a stop for 6" concrete gravel boards inset below each panel (I can handle these). I could then use some kind of cover strip down the joins in the panels to give it a better appearance extending down to retain the gravel boards. Do you think this will work? Has anyone done this before? Also, as the fence is south facing the existing arris rails haven't had any sunlight and although a little dried and split are not soft or rotting, would I be able to reuse these? Thanks in advance.
