Plumbing

Types of Radiators

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.59 PM

I am having a new central heating system and wanted Steelrad compact radiators. My plumber has suggested Barlo compact, are they as good? Steelrad have a very good reputation, do Barlo? Thanks, Alex.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

All decent radiators come with a standard 10 year warranty, ask your plumber if this is the case! If he cannot prove this then seek another radiator manufacturer who does offer this warranty, its easy to check, just ask to see the radiator brochure.

I am not an expert in all manufacures,s radiators but from memory I think the main difference is that the Barlo rads are round topped and the steelrad ones have a square profile. One point worth considering for the future though is the blled nipple ! With the barlo rads, I believe the pin is threaded straight into the radiator, whilst with the steelrad the pin is located within a bush, then threaded into the readiator. May not be relevant whilst everything is new, but I have had to change several radiators over the years where the system has corroded, and the vent pin rusted / leaking. With the bush type vent pins, (easily recognisable as they are a hexanganal chrome fitting), if anything goes wrong you can just replace the bush, not havig to remove / discard the entire radiator.
