Grade II listed building / alterations - do I need architect, designer or structural engineer?!

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.57 PM

We have a grade II listed Georgian building. Despite being a lovely house (bit biased I know!) we need to do some major work to it to accommodate our growing family. We have a problem with two bedrooms sharing one access (small corridor) and having steep stairs, plus our kitchen being extremely dark. Which person is the best to go to for advice around this and, potentially, to draw up plans/ideas? Is it an architect or designer or, even, structural engineer?! Thanks, in advance, for any answers.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

as it is a grade 11 listed building your first port of call should be to your local council listings officer they will be able to advise you what can and cannot be done to change or alter the existing property, listed buildings come under English heritage and as such any alterations must be passed by them including materials used without their go ahead any alterations will not be passed by your local planning department or signed of by building regs good luck aklex

Hi. I would go with an architect. He/she can design the new layout with your ideas and likes/dislikes taken into account. They will have solutions for any problem areas and can then recommend engineers to you if they are needed for planning purposes etc. Please dont go on the architects estimates for the cost of the work though, they are ridiculously optimistic by nature and are often well out on costs!!
