Cracked basecoat

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.59 PM

Hi, Wondering if anyone can help as can't find any answers or simular questions! I've just stripped off old woodchip wallpaper from 2 bedrooms, this was fine, but left patchy paint work underneath (bright orange!). So I bought Ronseal Triple Action basecoat which was rubbish and covered no better than a cheap white paint. So having used PolyCell 3 in 1 Basecoat before in other rooms, decided to buy this again and paint over the top of the Ronseal. At first it looked really good and covered amazingly, but now it has been dry for a few days all of the walls have crackled effect and if you rub the paint it all flakes off! Can anyone advise on what I should do? We got a friend round who was a painter and he'd never seen it before and said we'd just have to sand it down and re-paint using the PolyCell, just wondering if there was any other solution? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi jennie84 Having not seen the paintwork i cant be 100% sure on what is on wall sounds like a varnish however i would wash down the paintwork with a degreaser or maybe use a washing up liquid and let it dry sand down and apply a coat of ZINSSER B-I-N PRIMER this is a very strong primer and available from good trade outlets and probably BandQ. If it is still cracking after this maybe look at applying lining paper to the walls. Hope this helps Alex Berry
