Damp through stone walls
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.56 PM
I have been to view a property which is built of stone construction only to find the external ground is higher than floor level in the cottage which has lead to moist internal walls, could I stop the damp by just reducing ground level lower than finished floor as some other trades have said to reduce then treat with a sealer then fill with stone ( small stone ). Hope you can advise many thanks Rob

hi, dig a trench say 100mm wide at least 150mm below your floor level then fill with gravel to create soakaway. Then I would leave the walls to dry out. You might have to remove plaster upto around a metre high if walls wont dry out, but doubtful that you'll need a damp proof course injectiong as its pretty obvious as to whats causing the damp. Damp proof companies are good at just touching walls with a damp meter and saying needs a damp prrof course without actually looking for any problems that could be causing the damp!

Hello,
Removing any type of soil from external walls will help.
Applying sealant and loose gravel as well. However sealant need to be applied professorially.
I would get free advice and quote from damp-proofing company so that you know exactly what are you committing yourself to and cost involved. Good companies will give you guaranties for 5 - 10 years, the lest.
DIY remedies to this type of situation can turn around and bite big.
Hope it helps
