Windows & Door fitting

Upvc door only opens with the key and not the handle.

Anonymous user 13/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

I wander if anyone can help me. I have an anglian uPVC door with a split spindle lever/pad operation. Recently the door has not been opening from the inside, unless I use the door key to spring the latch back. Yesterday I returned home and was locked out as I had left a key on the inside of the lock, fortunately my neighbour has a ladder and I had left a top window open. I do not want to be in this position again so what do I need to replace. The problem is; when I am on the inside of the house and press the handle down (with no locks/hooks /deadbolts/espags etc nothing activated - just the latch keeping the door locked) the handle is not activating the latch to spring into the door and open, it is only with a key that I can open the door. What do I need to replace is it the euro barrel, the spindles, handles, lock or door espag. Can anyone help me as I do not want to keep having to use a key to open the door from the inside as I may forget to remove it again.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Is sounds like the lock mechanics inside may have broken in to bits and gets stuck I've done loads of these repairs , to fix not to bad you have to take Lock out and take the case of the centre lock , but !! Be care as lots off little parts and springs,, regards billy

These locks can be very tricky because when you have removed it, opened the casing, there are a lot of moving parts that have to be in the correct position to ensure the lock works. This is best handled by a qualified person. It sounds as if the lever handle part of the lock has failed. Problems will be: identifying the lock, obtaining a replacement that is exactly like for like. Look for makers name on the fore-end of the lock. Good luck. Paul
