With an exterior renovation, how do we get the finish of the cladding and the design of the new windows to marry up

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.34 PM

we are considering buying a very ugly bungalow. We would like to timber clad much of it and put in new windows. Then have plain render on the other bits Its in the highlands. how do we ensure that we get the cladding and the look of the windows to work together and look nice. Would the carpenter help or the window people or do you get them to speak to each other?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, your question is a bit vague and hard to answer on here, and is impossible to say without seeing the job. If i were you i would get some reputable local carpenters round and have a chat with them as if they are decent they will come up with ideas that will look good or as good as possible. expect to pay no less than £120 a day for a carpenters services. Hope that helps.

You will find the that standard windows are limited in their finish and most cladding timbers are designed for that purpose and again are limited , however most cladding timber is also available so that you could have the windows custom made in matching timber. a cheaper way would be to have new timber frame windows installed then stain the frames to match the cladding. Hope this helps.

It's really a job for your carpenter or builder. The window company would have to install the windows to suit the finish of the cladding. Its not difficult to do right but it's also very easy to mess up. Get everyone on site early before any work is done and agree on a plan. Your carpenter should be the lead trade on this as the windows have to suit the cladding. The most important thing is to plan ahead, anticipate problems and check, check, check. Good luck
