French doors on side of garage
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.58 PM
Hi, I have recently moved into a new build property, and I have an external garage (located within boundaries). I want to put a set of French doors on the long side of the garage (in between supporting bricks) I will be using a FENSA door company, do you think I will need to contact my local council to approve, the garage will still be classed as a garage, but I Intend to convert the garage into a home studio in the next year or so, I'm assuming building regs would then be required. Thanks Simon
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Providing you use either a FENSA or CERTASS registered installer you won't need to get this signed off. Get the contractor to provide you with proof that they are registered as unfortunately there are those out there that give us registered companies a bad name.
You will need to apply for building regs when you do decide to convert the garage but also give your local planning team at your council a call and check to see if your permitted development rights to convert are still intact on your property. If they are, you won't need planning but if not you can make the decision whether to go ahead and apply (drawings would be needed).
