Quality of finish on skim

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.44 PM

Hi All, I've recently bought my first house (1900's back to back) and had all the walls in the master bedroom skimmed. I'm not sure what to expect with the finish but the result seems very inconsistent. There are fine hairline cracks all over 2 of the walls, although they haven't opened up, it still concerns me. The finish is smooth in some places but rough and textured in others. There are uneven parts with scratches and chips. He hasn't gone completely down to the skirting board on one wall and there is now a gap behind it (he said the wall is bowed as the house is old, but I'd have though he would have filled the gaps as they weren't there before he started work). There are fine hairs sticking out in places. He's filled in some holes that I asked him too but the fill isn't consistent with the new plaster. He's coming back to look at it but I don't think he'll want to re skim the whole room. Oh and I also think he has only done one layer of skim. Is that normal? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Plastering is a two coat system, so if it was one coat, magic coat, I'm not surprised by the finish. Sounds like a bodge job to me.
