Michael replaced my kitchen door lock. The lock is now crooked. The screws are on an angle and not flush. One screw literally fell out into my hand today. The key rubs the keyhole; Michael said that this could not be remedied. The lock is stiff; Michael said that’s because it is new.
When I remembered I had two more doors to be checked, Michael kindly agreed to do so. He confirmed that the existing 5-lever front door lock is of the appropriate BS standard for insurance.
For the basement door, Michael agreed to change the lock, which I appreciated. He chiselled a hole for the larger 5-lever keep. It was messy – chisel marks marring the doorframe, shards of wood splinters sticking out literally 1 ½ inches, very uneven.
Then he said that my new lock hadn’t come with a keep, because the manufacturer forgot to include it. Michael was going to leave the lock with just raw unfinished wood on the door frame, no metal whatsoever. When I rejected this, he offered to post me a keep so I could install it myself. I rejected this plan also.
Later, Michael said because my door is warped at the top, the lock may be unable to lock; he said that this was not his responsibility.
Michael knew that I was unhappy with his work on the basement lock and refused to take full payment for the locks.
Total time to replace 2 locks and ascertain that another was already 5-lever British Standard: a mutually exhausting 8 hours.
