Patio laying
(Updated on 14 Jun 2023)I had a patio laid and it’s an appalling job. I discussed the job with the tradesman, specifically which porcelain slab to lay first to achieve the neat finish I wanted, but his workman did not do what we’d agreed and that resulted in an incorrect setting of the slabs, with an uneven overhang of the brickwork below.
Added to this was a sloppy excess of mortar on the brick courses below the slabs, which I had to remove while wet and scrape away from them at ground level after the team had left for the day.
The tradesmen came back that evening and apologised after I’d texted to complain, but that didn’t make the job right.
I’ve subsequently discovered the slabs are not set even so will have to be taken up and be relaid flat by a competent professional.
The following day, the contractor returned on the offensive and accused me of moving the slabs as some were not laid flat.
I no longer trust this tradesman or his team to do the job properly, but he has used my slabs and set me back from where I was before he started.
It’s a disaster.
I fail to see why I should pay him when the job is not done and my slabs are ruined. In fact I now have to seek damages to pay to correct the shoddy work.
Answer from tradesperson:
Some people just want a free patio
