He came to quote and advised that he charged a day rate for the work, which in his words was "I arrive no later than 8.30 and won't leave before 4pm", with an assurance that "I have my lunch and cigarette breaks but outside of this I will be grafting". On this basis we took Pat on for the job despite having two other quotes which were cheaper. Pat worked for 4 days - He always arrived on time but he left at 2pm one day, 3pm another and then 3.15. After this we contacted Pat to clarify exactly what the terms of our agreement meant, as while the work was good (not brilliant but we were happy with the quality) he wasn't working to the hours agreed. Pat became highly emotional and defensive and after a discussion informed us that he could no longer finish the work as agreed. We paid him instantly for the time up to that point and we've parted ways.
