Questions to ask a gas engineer in West Lothian

Choosing the right gas engineer is essential, not just for quality but also for your safety. You can be sure you find a suitable gas engineer by asking the right questions.

Some key questions you should ask before hiring a gas engineer in West Lothian include:

Are you Gas Safe registered?

This is the most important question to ask. Only Gas Safe–registered engineers are legally permitted to carry out gas work in the UK. Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card, which lists the types of gas appliances they’re qualified to work on.

What experience do you have with this type of job?

Whether you need a boiler installation, central heating repair, or a gas safety check, look for someone who has completed similar work recently. Experience with your specific appliance brand or system can help avoid costly mistakes.

Can you provide a detailed written quote?

A professional gas engineer in West Lothian should offer a clear, itemised quote covering labour, parts, call-out fees, and VAT. This avoids unexpected costs and lets you compare prices easily between engineers.

Do you offer any warranty or guarantee?

Ask whether the engineer guarantees their workmanship and if the manufacturer provides a boiler or parts warranty. Many gas engineers in West Lothian back their work for 12 months or more.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Gas leaks and heating failures can happen at any time. Ask if the West Lothian gas engineer provides 24/7 emergency cover, and confirm how quickly they can attend.

What are your charges for emergency or out-of-hours work?

Many West Lothian gas engineers charge a higher rate for evenings, weekends, or emergencies. You should be aware of these rates in advance to avoid unexpected costs if something goes wrong outside normal working hours.

Will you provide a Gas Safety Record after the work?

For installations or inspections, your West Lothian gas engineer should issue a Gas Safety Record (CP12) confirming the appliance or system has been checked and meets legal safety standards. Be sure that the engineer you choose will do so, if required for the job.
