Richard didn't listen to my requirements & rather than quoting for lime mortar as listed in my request on here, he just planned to use '5 in 1' which just didn't suit our 1860 barn. Not understanding the terminology it was only when he came to do a test patch I asked him when the lime would added that he declared this. Three of them turned up to do this test area the first thing they asked was where the nearest Building Merchants was. Richard & a young lad disappeared to buy supplies needed. They didn't even have a bucket or dust sheet which I provided - the dust sheet disappeared! They then just weren't listening to what I was saying but luckily my husband was working from home, we left them to finish the test area & my husband then phoned to explain the problem and cancel the work. I then found & employed a guy who specialises in brickwork restoration & he confirmed that the material & technique they used on our building was completely incorrect. Luckily only a small test area which had to be removed. I talked to the one who stayed behind, he normally works on new housing estates, so of course uses new techniques just not suited to the work we required - this guy shouldn't be let near to period properties! If we continued with RJD it could have been a costly mistake but of course most people wouldn’t realise the problem and just go along with what a builder tells them. I hired Merrick for a maintenance task. He arrived exactly when he said he would ( to the minute) and took the time to explain the different solutions to the issue. He returned the next day ( again to the minute) and completed the work. Very tidy. Very professional. An Excellent team. One to keep in my address book. Nathan Hughes and his team were very professional from the outset. The quote he supplied was equal to the others I had sought. The team turned up on the (cold and wet) morning as agreed. The standard of their work is impeccable. They had a few unexpected problems which they coped with, as if it was all part of the job. The care taken by Keith, the digger driver, is notable, carefully avoiding the waste pipe and high tension cable that they exposed as part of the excavation. The footings were laid with care and consideration of the steep incline of the site. They left the concrete to set for 24 hrs and then laid the retaining wall which, when finished, looked as straight and strong as could be, putting the original, crumbling wall, to shame. This was left for a week, to dry, before they set about replacing the soil behind. During this time, Nathan dressed the original wall to tidy it and match the height of the new laid blocks. The infill was done with as much care as the removal had been. Nathan then returned and filled in between the two walls with lime chippings to facilitate good drainage. Over all, I can't praise Nathan and his excellent team, enough. The professionalism and care, the quality of work and clean, tidy condition that they left the area in every day, is second to none. I am happy to heartily recommend Nathan Hughes and will be happy to use the team again for any other projects that come up.
